Why is your hair always changing color?
The reason my hair changes color nowadays is because of my acting gigs. There are times when I wear a wig, and times when it's just better to have brown hair because I'll be working in the play "Woody Sez" soon.
It started back in 1981, when I was in the Robin Flower Band, living in the Bay Area in CA. Robin asked if I might try putting a crazy color in my hair, (thinking she was going to have to talk me into it). All I needed was the suggestion! Back then, it was unusual for anyone except for hard core punk music. I wanted a way to express myself, a way to show people all is not what it seems.
For close to 20 years, I experimented with almost ever color in the spectrum, turquoise being second to my default purple. I experimented with being a blond, a redhead, and different shades of my natural color brown. It was like jewelry and makeup - a decoration. And it was unusual. It's not so unusual anymore.
One of my favorite experiences was when I move to Phoenix, AZ. I would walk into a club to sit in with one of the best country bands in town. I was unknown, and the band would take one look at me and think there was no way I would be able to play the fiddle in an authentic style. When I would suggest the song "Faded Love" and do it well, not only would they would be surprised and happy, the purple hair they saw me walk in with turned to red hair in their minds. That was something they culd deal with. I think it's interesting how people need to see what they want to.
